Sasso Nero

Sasso Nero is a Northern Beaches residence defined by the interplay of planes, material weight, and a controlled use of light. Set within the elevated bushland of Seaforth, the house is conceived as a grounded form, shaped and softened through careful articulation rather than overt gesture.

The architecture is driven by a series of intersecting planes that guide movement and direct views across the site. Edges are refined and selectively softened, allowing transitions between spaces to feel considered and continuous. Openings are positioned to frame the surrounding garden, reinforcing a strong indoor outdoor connection that sits at the core of the studio’s residential work.

Light is drawn deep into the plan through carefully placed skylights, introduced to overcome the constraints of the site and bring natural light into otherwise enclosed areas. This strategy produces a soft, diffused quality of light throughout the home, where shadows fall across curved and softened internal forms, enhancing depth and spatial calm. The interplay of light and shadow becomes a defining atmospheric condition of the house.

Materially, the project is deliberately restrained yet rich in texture. Internally, dark, heavily grained oak offsets bold natural stone, with bronze accents and carefully crafted details reinforcing a sense of precision. Repetition in tile formats establishes rhythm and cohesion, while a refined palette allows for moments of colour and playfulness within an otherwise controlled environment.

The interior approach extends into a curated language of design and inhabitation. Furniture and objects are selected to work in dialogue with the architecture rather than sit within it. Key pieces, including the Oscar Niemeyer Alta lounge chair positioned by the fireplace, alongside selected Brazilian references throughout, introduce a softer counterpoint to the architectural mass. These elements create repeated touch points that connect moments of living, resting, and gathering across the home.

Craft is expressed through detail rather than decoration. Junctions are resolved with precision, materials meet with clarity, and transitions are carefully composed to maintain continuity throughout the home. This level of resolution reinforces the broader architectural intent, where every element contributes to a unified spatial experience.

Externally, the architecture is grounded by a robust charred cladding, naturally resistant to weathering and suited to the coastal environment. In selected areas, stone sourced directly from the site is reintroduced into the building fabric, strengthening the connection between house and landscape.

Continuing the studio’s exploration of contemporary coastal architecture, the design responds to the environmental conditions of Sydney’s Northern Beaches through a restrained material palette, robust external finishes, and a strong emphasis on natural light, ventilation, and indoor outdoor living. The architecture balances solidity and softness, combining durable materials with carefully framed connections to landscape to create a calm and enduring approach to coastal family life.

The landscape was developed in close collaboration with the landscape architect, with defined garden moments positioned to extend the architectural language outward. Planting is carefully composed to frame views, drawing the eye beyond the built form and reinforcing a constant dialogue between interior spaces and the surrounding bushland. These moments of framed greenery soften the edges of the architecture and deepen the sense of immersion within the site.

Designed for family life, the plan balances gathering and retreat through a sequence of spaces that unfold gradually. This measured progression enhances the experience of scale, light, and connection throughout the home.

Sasso Nero reflects a considered approach to residential architecture in Sydney, where refinement in materiality, interior authorship, landscape integration, and a sense of permanence define a more enduring form of luxury.
